ZAZI means uku-zazi — "to know yourself" — in isiZulu. It is an Afrocentric AI ecosystem and research platform that challenges the Western bias embedded in global AI datasets by centering African languages, oral traditions, and indigenous knowledge systems within generative AI architecture.
ZAZI does not translate African knowledge into dominant technological languages. It builds AI that breathes in isiZulu — adapting to the rhythms, registers, and cosmological logics of African oral culture.

In Southern African Nguni philosophy, breath — umoya — is not merely biological. It is the medium through which ancestors communicate, through which a community recalibrates its relationship to the world.
This is how ZAZI is designed to function. Rather than imposing a fixed Western AI architecture onto African content, ZAZI breathes — receiving African oral input and generating outputs that adapt to the rhythms and cosmological logics of that input.

Umlilo builds speculative African futures through sound, artificial intelligence, storytelling, and immersive media.
Founder of ZAZI. Creator of Cynthesia. Recording artist with 1M+ streams. Two TEDx talks on AI and African futures. Exhibited internationally including at the Vitra Design Museum.

Gideon Gyimah is a Ghanaian AI engineer specialising in enterprise-scale speech, banking, and multilingual AI systems. He has deployed voice-AI infrastructure for financial institutions across Africa, led UNESCO's multilingual disaster-communication AI, and fine-tuned Whisper models for African languages now used in real-world, community-impact deployments.

Beyond the
Algorithm
ZAZI was developed as part of the AI & African Music Project — a research pilot co-custodied by the Wits University MIND Institute, Billboard Africa, and MIT. The project brought together five creator-engineer teams from across Africa to develop groundbreaking AI-driven musical tools rooted in indigenous creativity.
Umlilo serves as both researcher and practitioner — embedding ZAZI within this institutional framework while maintaining full artistic sovereignty over the platform and its outputs.
